RJES Students in 3rd-5th grade are invited to join the Bird Watching Club! This club will consist of four different classroom sessions where they will learn about bird migration, wildlife conservation, and bird identification. These will be held on Wednesdays from 2:45-3:45 beginning Wednesday, April 3rd. Students who attend three sessions will be eligible to spend a day in May on the beach with s'mores, hot dogs, and identifying as many birds as possible! If your student would like to join, there will be a signup sheet in the RJES office. Attention AISD Community: The District is aware of a post from October of 2023 from the social media platform Snapchat that is currently recirculating through members of both the Metlakatla and Ketchikan communities. The post contains comments of a racist and threatening nature made by an individual in Ketchikan. The Ketchikan Gateway Borough School District Administration addressed this issue when it took place last fall with both the Ketchikan Police Department and the FBI. Annette Island School District does not tolerate racism of any kind, and statements of this nature are completely unacceptable. We appreciate the Ketchikan School District administration's timely and thorough response to this unfortunate incident. On Friday, Mrs. Henry's 3rd graders went out to the sandbar with Gamaas and Ms. Pike to practice a scientific sampling method for Sea Week! Students laid quadrats on the beach and counted the mussels, katy chitons (gumboots), and rockweed inside the frames. Later this spring, 4th and 5th grades will repeat the samples to see how the amount of each species changes as the season progresses, and all three classes will sample in quadrats on a variety of beaches during Sea Week in May.
