Today, we're celebrating National Maintenance Worker Appreciation Day, which is officially on March 6th, but since we'll be on Spring Break, we're celebrating early!
AISD is fortunate to have an incredible maintenance team that works diligently (in all kinds of weather!) to keep our buildings and grounds a safe place to come to school and work every day. Thank you to Brielle, Cameron, Marcus, and Mike- we greatly appreciate everything you do!

About Rachel & Keve:
Friends since the age of 10, Rachel Handman-violin and Keve Wilson-oboe, grew up dreaming of performing on Broadway, and spent every Saturday studying at Manhattan School of Music as teenagers, where they would practice showtunes and Irish jigs and reels. Having realized that Broadway dream, they were in the orchestra for the 2018 Broadway revival of Carousel and recently played together in the new Sondheim musical Here We Are, as well as over 20 other Broadway shows. From Carnegie Hall to small intimate gatherings, this violin and oboe duo pushes the boundaries of musical genre — fusing classical virtuosity with the spontaneity of a bluegrass band. Rachel spent a year in Bolivia, performing string quartets by day and in Bolivian cafes by night. Keve traveled to Europe as oboist with the Absolute Ensemble and learned how to Irish jig like a fiddler. Rachel and Keve have performed at music festivals and on concert series around the country. Their debut album, The Catskill Sessions, is available on the CCR/NAXOS label and available on all streaming services. Rachel and Keve are joined by guitarist and arranger Justin Rothberg.

The District was greatly saddened to learn of the passing of our friend and former AISD staff member, Raf. His loss is felt across Metlakatla by his family, friends, and our staff who worked alongside him for many years.

This is an incredible event with workshops and solos and ensembles during the day, and public concerts in the evening. We will post when we know our Metlakatla High School students will be performing as soon as we have more information!

Students observed an Alaska Marine Highway ferry undergoing propeller and propeller shaft servicing, toured the machine shop, and watched a variety of machining and welding processes in action. They also visited the submersible dry dock, where a NOAA vessel was being repaired and serviced.
Experiences like this help connect classroom learning to high-demand careers in welding, machining, marine service, and industrial trades. T'oya̱xsut 'nüün to JAG Shipyard for investing time in our students and supporting career and technical education!
