Attention Richard Johnson Families: RJ Elementary is proud to announce the creation of the RJ Elementary Space Explorers Club! This club will meet from 3:45-5:15 every week and is open to a limited number of K-5 participants. Students K-2 will attend space club on Mondays and 3-5 will attend on Wednesdays. Students will explore the vastness of space with their imagination and use science problem solving skills to solve weekly puzzles and challenges in space. Some of our planned lessons include: -Talk to a real life jet propulsion engineer about how rockets work. -Create spaceships out of high tech cutting edge materials (cardboard). -Meet alien species (puppets) who are experiencing conflicts and try and solve them. -Use a new planetarium to travel the stars and look for areas to discover together. Congratulations to the November Winner of the Golden Apple Award of Excellence, Emilee Adams! Here is what the nominators had to say: "Emilee Adams runs her 1st grade class with much energy, positive vibes and aplomb. The classroom management strategies she uses ensure that students always know what is expected, where to be and when. Students feel secure in routines and happy with the positive feedback she consistently provides. The range of skill levels in her class is wide. She addresses that with adapting instruction, including, and this is not always seen in classrooms, giving appropriate and challenging work to those ready for more. In her class, a student who might be a behavior problem because of not being engaged is instead occupied with learning in the brain friendly zone of proximal development. Emilee also makes learning personal. Students are invested in original projects they have a voice in creating, projects that also meet standards. Recently students created original math stories with equations, visual representations of the math, stories they wrote, and original artwork. This teacher also consistently reaches out to curriculum specialists for suggestions and ideas on how she improve her craft. After doing so she always reports back on the outcome and is prepared to discuss how to get to the next level.
