Class placements can be seen in PowerSchool, or feel free to call the school. Please note that 3-5th graders will have multiple teachers delivering instruction. Our third graders will have Ms. Schutz for math, Ms. Henry for language arts and Ms. Pike for science and social studies. Fourth and fifth will continue to have Ms. Patterson, Mr. Stemp, and Ms. Pike for their core subjects. Kinder through second-grade students may receive core reading instruction in a different classroom to best fit their individual needs.

Metlakatla Families,
It is hard for me to believe that I am starting my fourteenth year with the Annette Island School District. This will, however, be my first year as the RJ Elementary Principal and I am thrilled for the opportunity to serve the community in this new and exciting way. Metlakatla shined bright this summer, and I hope that everyone was able to engage in some of the amazing activities this beautiful island has to offer.
As we make the transition into the new school year, I would like to emphasize my commitment to this community and your children. Communication between home and school is vital, and while social media plays a role in our technology-driven lives, it should never serve as a substitute for a phone call or face-to-face contact. My number one job is to be here for you and I look forward to supporting you as your child grows and thrives at RJ Elementary. Building a strong community starts with the children, and I am truly honored to be a part of their lives.
We will be sending out more information as the week progresses. I am looking forward to seeing everyone on Friday for our Back to School Night.

The month of April in Sm’algyax is Ha’li lax sis’waanx, which means the time to gather herring eggs! Mrs. McCarty brought s’waanx (herring eggs) on gyoos (kelp) and s’waanx on laxs (hemlock branches) to share in our classroom today.

RJES Students in 3rd-5th grade are invited to join the Bird Watching Club! This club will consist of four different classroom sessions where they will learn about bird migration, wildlife conservation, and bird identification. These will be held on Wednesdays from 2:45-3:45 beginning Wednesday, April 3rd.
Students who attend three sessions will be eligible to spend a day in May on the beach with s'mores, hot dogs, and identifying as many birds as possible!

On Friday, Mrs. Henry's 3rd graders went out to the sandbar with Gamaas and Ms. Pike to practice a scientific sampling method for Sea Week!
Students laid quadrats on the beach and counted the mussels, katy chitons (gumboots), and rockweed inside the frames. Later this spring, 4th and 5th grades will repeat the samples to see how the amount of each species changes as the season progresses, and all three classes will sample in quadrats on a variety of beaches during Sea Week in May. Students also learned the Sm'algyax words and scientific names for each species:
mussels - gyels - Mytilus trossulus
katy chitons - 'yaanst - Katharina tunicata
rockweed - p'aatsah - Fucus distichus
