Recently, our 2nd graders experienced the entire process of making Hawaiian salmon strips!
They began by watching Salmon Boy: Shanyáak'utlaax, a Tlingit story about respect for nature, animals and culture. Mrs. Cook then showed the students how she fillets salmon with fish caught by the Cook Family. Students got to touch the salmon, learn about different types of salmon, pull out pin bones, and scrape any leftover meat out to be used in other dishes.
Next, the students brought anything that couldn't be used from the salmon back to the ocean. They made the Hawaiian strip brine, brought the strips to the smoker at Mrs. Cook's house, and later, shared their salmon with students and staff at school! What an amazing project for our students!
