What is the Perkins Act and Grant ?
The Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Improvement Act (Perkins IV) was originally authorized in 1984, and most recently reauthorized in August 2006. The purpose of Perkins is to provide individuals with the academic and technical skills needed to succeed in a knowledge- and skills-based economy. Perkins supports career and technical education that prepares its students both for postsecondary education and the careers of their choice.
How does AISD benefit from the Perkins Act?
Annette Island School District currently receives funding for the approved Scuba Diving program. After an extensive course and curriculum approval process, funds could be extended to other CTE programs including STEM, Construction, Native Art, and Woods. The grant is implemented through Career and Technical Education (CTE), which is a division of the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development (DEED).
